Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the country’s largest automobile maker announced its plans to make an investment of Rs 2,000 crore at its Gugaon production facility to set up a diesel engine manufacturing plant in order to cater to the surge in demand for the diesel versions of its car models the Swift and the Swift DZire.
Mr. Shashank Srivastava Chief General Manager (Marketing) MSIL stated that the diesel engine plant would have an output of 1,50,000 units in 2012 to meet the growing demand for the two car models. He added that the diesel cars sold in the period of January – March 2012 accounted for about 50 percent of the total sales in the period.
Commenting on the launch of its new utility vehicle the Ertiga, Mr. Srivastava stated that the segment hold about 10 percent share of the Indian auto market and is growing at 20 percent annually.
