Volvo to unveil excavators made in India

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), part of Volvo India Private Ltd (VIPL), will launch excavators made in India by November 2011. According to a top company official, for the first time in India, the company plans to manufacture excavators up to 30-tonne capacity.

VIPL Managing Director, Mr. AM Muralidharan stated that the company has a manufacturing plant at Peenya (near Bangalore), where a range of road-making machinery is being made. An investment of Rs. 90 crore will be made to expand the factory and double its capacity to manufacture basic range of excavators up to a 30-tonne capacity for the Indian market. Machines with higher capacity will still be imported since the demand for such products is not enough to sustain production.

Currently, the company’s Bangalore facility churns out 4,000 units of road-making machinery each year. The company plans to double its capacity along with producing basic models of 20 tonne and 30 tonne capacity with 2-3 variants in each of these basic models. The company also aims to position itself as one of the top three construction equipment manufacturers in India by 2015.
