Following the footprints of Hyundai and Suzuki, Ford is making India its production base for the Figo. Not known to many, India has become the world’s largest exporter of small cars as international companies find it more economical to market the smaller car models made in India as compared to other nations.
The reasons for these international giants to choose India as their production base rests primarily on India’s well developed steel and metallurgical industries and mature vendors of auto components. India will produce 2.7 million passengers cars in 2011-2012 of which 25 percent will be exported. Reflecting the changing trends, 75 percent of these cars would be hatchbacks.
