Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) will soon equip the WagonR and the Alto with Bharat Stage-IV compliant K-series engines. The two cars are currently powered by F-series engines, which are not BS-IV compliant. The Bharat Stage IV emission norms will be effective in eleven cities in India starting from April 2010. Both the Alto and the WagonR are among Maruti’s highest selling models in the country. The Alto, which is also the most popular car in the country, crossed the 1 million sales mark in November 2008.
MSIL’s more recent models like the A-Star and the Ritz already come with K-series engines, which are said to be more fuel-efficient than older engines. The company has already upgraded the SX4 to meet the BS-IV norms, and is planning to do the same with the Swift and the DZire. The Maruti 800 will not be upgraded.
